The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) at Paavai Engineering College, in association with the Institutions of Engineers (India), organized a WORKSHOP On “Image Processing and AI/ML Applications using MATLAB and Simulink” on 05.03.2026 and 06.03.2026 at Cute Hall and MCT Computer Lab (T240) from 09:30 AM to 04:30 PM.. The workshop provided a blend of theoretical insights and hands-on laboratory sessions held at the T240 MCT lab.
The event began with a Prayer Song by the students, followed by the presentation of the Vision,Mission,PEO of the department by Ms.Sasipoorani V of III-year ECE. The Welcome Address was delivered by Ms. Madhuvarshini G of III-year ECE. Dr. K.K. Ramasamy, Director – Administration, Paavai Educational Institutions, delivered the Presidential Address, wherein he appreciated the initiative taken by the department and encouraged students to actively engage in such knowledge-enriching sessions. The Chief guest introduction was given by Mr. Kannan K. S of III year ECE, who expressed admiration for the speaker’s achievements and career journey.
The keynote address by Mr. V. Karthikeyan, Senior Application Engineer – MATLAB from ARK Infosolutions Pvt. Ltd., Chennai. ARK Infosolutions is a leading value-added distributor for technology products in India, specializing in segments such as Simulation, Manufacturing, and Education.
Key technical areas included: Foundations of Image Processing: Participants learned how to use the imfinfo command to retrieve image metadata (format, dimensions, and bit depth) and how to read images using the imread function. Color Space Manipulation: The sessions covered the extraction of R, G, and B components from 3D matrices and the conversion of colored images into grayscale formats by compressing color information into a single channel. Image Enhancement and Transformation: Practical exercises included adjusting image brightness, resizing, rotating, and performing scalar addition for techniques like watermarking. Advanced Computer Vision: Attendees explored edge detection techniques, specifically using the Canny and Sobel edge detectors to identify object boundaries within images. AI and Machine Learning (ML): The workshop introduced building classification models, such as the Flower Classification example, and utilized deep learning architectures like AlexNet. Hardware Integration: A specialized session demonstrated how to connect and use mobile phones with MATLAB for real-time applications.
The event was highly interactive, allowing students to understand the practical applications of their curriculum. This event aligns with SDG 4, SDG 9, and SDG 11. The session ended with a vote of thanks by Dharanya R II year ECE, acknowledging the resource person’s contribution to enhancing the students’ technical perspective of MATLAB and Simulink.
The event was convened by Dr.R.Mohanapriya, Associate Professor and Head, ECE, and coordinated by Dr.S.Vijayakumar, Professor, Dr.K. Thirumala Lakshmi Assistant Professor, Mr.S.Satheeshkumar, and M.Renuka Co Coordinators. 10 faculty members and 134 students from the department actively participated in the session.
