About the Department

Civil Engineering is one of the major disciplines in the Engineering profession and its principles are involved in the design, development, construction and maintenance of structures. The Department of Civil Engineering has been established in the year 2005 and M.E Structural Engineering in the year 2012. The departments have well established laboratories supplementing the academic needs of the students with well qualified faculty members in different areas of specialization .The academic activities of the Department emphasize deep understanding of fundamental principles & development of creative ability to handle the challenges of Civil Engineering. In addition to academic activities, the Department involves in offering consultancy services to the industry and society.

Programme Specific Outcomes (PSO)

Dr .K. Sharmiladevi,
Associate professor & HOD,
Department of Civil Engineering

Dr. K. Sharmiladevi completed her Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering in 2005 from Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore. She did her M.E. in Construction Engineering and Management in 2008 from the College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University, Chennai. She completed her doctoral degree from Anna University, Chennai, specializing in sustainable construction materials.

During her postgraduate studies, she contributed to the project titled “Rescheduling of Dubai Mall Entertainment Building Roof Erection” executed by Eversendai Construction Private Ltd., Chennai. Following her post-graduation, she was placed as a Senior Design Engineer in the Roads and Runways Sector at Larsen & Toubro (L&T) ECC Division, Headquarters, Chennai. At L&T, she was involved in the standardization of structures, formwork design, and preparation of prefabrication unit drawings. She actively contributed to major infrastructure development projects such as AVMRP and HSRDC under the Gujarat State Road Development Corporation. She also served as an ISO Audit Coordinator in the Roads and Runways Sector.

Dr. K.Sharmiladevi has a total of 17 years of professional experience, including 11 years in teaching and 6 years in the construction industry and has published numerous research articles in reputed national and international journals. She is a Life Member of professional bodies such as the Institution of Engineers (India) and the International Association of Engineers (IEANG). With strong teaching and industry experience, and driven by her passion for education, she continuously strives for the betterment of the student community.

Dr.K.Sharmiladevi has been instrumental in motivating students and faculty toward research and innovation. Notably, during the MSME 2.0 Hackathon, her students secured project grants amounting to ₹13.35 lakhs for their solid waste management project. She ensures that students gain practical exposure by facilitating internships at the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) every year.

She is also the founder of the faculty startup ECOFIT, focusing on the development of sustainable construction materials such as agro waste paver blocks, light-emitting tiles, waste foundry sand bricks and paver blocks, and bio manure for sustainable agricultural practices. She actively encourages faculty and students to engage in consultancy services, including testing of construction materials, surveying, design, and drafting works.

All laboratories have sufficient natural light, good ventilation with tubes and fan arrangement.
Laboratory plans are prepared for each laboratory course, these plans include number of experiments as prescribed in the curriculum.
Laboratory manuals are prepared for all the experiments in the plan and are provided to the students at the time of practical hours.
Continuous assessment system is also implemented for assessment of laboratory work.
The assessment is done on the basis of timely submission of laboratory sheets, understanding of the experiment through oral questions and participation in performing the experiment.
As per the requirement minor repair works are carried out by the lab assistant.
Maintenance of computers is taken care by the help of system administrator of our institute itself.
Major repair works are outsourced by following the procedure of the institute.
All laboratories are equipped with modern equipment to meet the requirement of the curriculum.
Issues are immediately resolved.
User register is maintained in every laboratory.
Safety equipment are inspected and frequently recharged.
