Alumni Guest Lecture on “Role of Biomedical Engineer in Hospital”

The Department of Biomedical Engineering, Paavai Engineering College (Autonomous), in association with the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), organized an Alumni Guest Lecture on “Role of Biomedical Engineer in Hospital” on 21st August 2026. The programme aimed to provide students with practical insights into the professional responsibilities, career opportunities, and contributions of Biomedical Engineers in hospital environments.

The session was delivered by Mr. A. Faijoorrahuman, B.E., MBA, Biomedical Engineer at Vinayaka Mission Kirupananda Variyar Medical College & Hospital and an alumnus of Paavai Engineering College (2018–2022). Drawing from his professional experience in the healthcare sector, he shared valuable insights into the practical applications of biomedical engineering in hospital settings.

During the lecture, the speaker elaborated on the roles and responsibilities of Biomedical Engineers in hospitals, particularly in medical equipment management, installation, inspection, calibration, preventive and corrective maintenance, performance testing, troubleshooting, and ensuring the safe operation of medical devices. He emphasized the importance of equipment accuracy, reliability, and patient safety, along with adherence to relevant standards and hospital procedures.

The speaker also highlighted the importance of coordination among Biomedical Engineers, doctors, nurses, technicians, vendors, and hospital administrators to ensure effective healthcare technology management. He introduced students to various career opportunities in hospitals, medical equipment industries, clinical engineering departments, service organizations, and healthcare technology management.

Furthermore, he emphasized the need to develop technical expertise, problem-solving abilities, communication skills, documentation practices, and professional ethics. The interactive session helped students understand the practical expectations of the biomedical engineering profession and the importance of continuous learning to keep pace with emerging medical technologies. Students actively participated in the session and clarified their queries regarding hospital-based careers and professional development.

Overall, the alumni guest lecture was highly informative and beneficial to the students. The programme successfully bridged the gap between academic learning and professional hospital practice, motivated students to explore career opportunities in clinical engineering, and enhanced their understanding of the vital role Biomedical Engineers play in ensuring the safe, efficient, and effective management of healthcare technology.
