The Department of Aeronautical Engineering, Paavai Engineering College (Autonomous), successfully organized a Guest Lecture on “Induced Boundary Layer Transition” on 12th October 2026. The event witnessed active participation from second, third, and final-year students of Aeronautical Engineering.
The Chief Guest and Resource Person was Mr. U. Yasar Arafath, Course Instructor for the Thermal and Fluids domain, Aeronautics and Space Technology Program, Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Madras, Chennai. He explained the fundamentals of boundary layer theory, laminar-turbulent transition, and the significance of free stream turbulence in inducing early transition. He elaborated on how controlled disturbances and laser-based energy deposition can trigger boundary layer transition and its implications for skin friction, heat transfer, and aerodynamic performance. The concepts were illustrated with experimental results and case studies from IIT Madras research laboratories. He also interacted with the students regarding various research opportunities and advanced research areas at IIT Madras, such as hypersonic flows, flow control, turbulence modelling, and laser diagnostics, and guided them on career paths in aerospace R&D and higher studies.
In total, 100 members attended the session. The welcome address and introduction of the Chief Guest were delivered by Ms. Yasicaa V., III Year / Aero. The presidential address was given by Dr. M. Premkumar, Principal. The function was presided over by Dr. R. Arravind, Head of the Department, Aeronautical Engineering, and the event was coordinated by Mr. G. Sasi and Mr. P. Prasanna, Assistant Professors, Department of Aeronautical Engineering. The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Rithika S. G., IV Year / Aero, and the master of ceremony was handled by Ms. Thrisha S., IV Year / Aero.
