The Department of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Technology, in association with the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), organized a session on “Patent Rights and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)” on 29 August 2026 at AB 106, PEC. The session aimed to create awareness among students about the fundamentals of patents and Intellectual Property Rights, including patentability criteria, filing procedures, and the importance of protecting innovative ideas and research outcomes.
The event began with a welcome address by the IIC coordinators. The gathering was addressed by Dr. G. Balaji, Professor and Head, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Paavai Engineering College, who served as the distinguished resource person. He provided a comprehensive overview of Intellectual Property Rights, with particular emphasis on patents, their significance, and the basic process involved in patent filing and protection. He highlighted the importance of conducting prior-art searches and maintaining originality while developing innovative ideas. Dr. Balaji emphasized how patents and other forms of IPR can support researchers, students, and entrepreneurs in protecting their innovations and converting research outcomes into commercially viable products or technologies. He motivated students to adopt ethical innovation practices, prevent plagiarism, and recognize the role of IPR in entrepreneurship and technology commercialization.
The session provided students with a broader understanding of the legal, ethical, and commercial dimensions of innovation. It motivated them to identify potentially patentable ideas from their academic projects and research activities, and to actively participate in research, innovation, and entrepreneurship while appropriately protecting their intellectual contributions. The session was organized by the Institution’s Innovation Council, coordinated by Dr. P. Balaganesh and Dr. H. Harikrishnan, and convened by Dr. C. Nirmala and Dr. M. Masilamani Selvam.
