The Department of Chemical Engineering (CE), Paavai Engineering College in Association with Institution Innovation Council (IIC) jointly organized Guest Lecture on “Enhancing Soft Skills and Personality” to strengthen students’ personal and professional competencies on 18.03.2026. The session focused on the importance of communication, leadership, and emotional intelligence in shaping an individual’s personality and career success.
The lecture began with an introduction to soft skills, emphasizing that they are critical for effective human interaction in both academic and professional environments. The speaker
highlighted the importance of communication as the foundation of all interpersonal relationships and explained the building blocks of communication, including listening skills and feedback mechanisms. Students were encouraged to develop creative thinking abilities and adopt out-of-the-box approaches to problem-solving by generating multiple solutions for a single problem.
A major part of the session covered non-verbal communication, including haptics (use of touch), types of handshakes such as firm handshake, dead fish handshake, knuckle handshake, and covered handshake, and their role in conveying confidence. The speaker also explained proxemics, focusing on intimate and personal space, along with the influence of clothing and accessories on perception. Body language, posture, and gestures were discussed in detail, highlighting how they reflect confidence and personality. The concept of high power poses and low power poses was introduced to demonstrate their impact on self-confidence and presence.
The speaker further explained different types of stress, including positive stress (eustress), which motivates individuals to complete tasks, and negative stress, which arises from pressure and
incomplete work. Practical tips for stress management were provided to help students maintain balance and productivity.
The session included interactive activities such as self-introduction exercises where students shared unknown facts about themselves and received feedback from peers, as well as a personality assessment test to improve self-awareness. These activities helped students understand their strengths and areas for improvement in interpersonal skills.
The lecture also emphasized the importance of maintaining human interaction in the digital age, referencing a quote by Albert Einstein to highlight the risks of overdependence on technology.
Overall, the session was highly informative and interactive, enabling students to enhance their communication skills, build confidence, improve creativity, and develop essential interpersonal skills required for their future careers.
