A two-day faculty development programme on “Implications of Technical concepts in laboratories” was organised for the Civil Engineering departments of Paavai Engineering Colleges at Paavai institutions. The programme was conducted on 01.12.2018 & 07.12.2018 and 30 faculty members from our institutions attended the programme. The programme started with a prayer song followed by Tamilthaivazhthu. The Presidential address was given by Dr.K.K.Ramasamy, Director Administration, Paavai institutions. In his presidential address, he emphasized three concepts which were “Be deaf to the negative thoughts”, “Don’t wait for opportunities” and “Teachers should be strong in the fundamentals”. Dr.M.Devi, Principal, Paavai College of Engineering, gave a brief inaugural address. In her address she highlighted the concept of doing justice to one’s profession by using one’s potential to the maximum. She added that one should serve as a role model to the juniors. Dr.Kasthuribai, Dean-faculty development, Paavai institutions, felicitated the gathering. She threw light on the importance of laboratory classes. Further she quoted that “Engineers are the Engines of a Nation”. She stated that one should acquire practical knowledge through laboratory classes. Laboratory classes should not be treated as Standalone classes. Learners should be trained to apply theory in the practical classes. Finally she quoted a Chinese saying that Good teachers become great teachers only when they promote learning by doing method. On 01.12.2018, Mr.K.Vivek, Mr.M.Karthick, Ms.P.Kiruthiga, Assistant Professors, Department of Civil Engineering, Paavai institutions were the resource persons. In the morning session they handled the Introduction, principle, working and applications of Double shear test, Brinell hardness test and Test on Simply supported beam. In the afternoon session they handled the principle, working and applications of Test on tension spring, Torsion test and Charpy impact test On 07.12.2018, Mr.A.Arun, Ms.K.Saranya, Ms.A.Neeta, Assistant Professors, Department of Civil Engineering, Paavai institutions, were the resource persons. In the morning session they handled the Introduction, principle, working and applications of Gear pump and Venturimeter. In the afternoon session they handled the Introduction, principle, working and applications of Major losses in pipes and Hydraulic flume assembly. The programme ended with the Vote of thanks by Mrs.J.Umanambi, HOD/Civil, Paavai Engineering College.
