The Department of Mechatronics organized a guest lecture on the title, “Research Challenges in Fog Environment for IoT Services”. The session was inaugurated by Dr. M. Premkumar, Principal, Paavai Engineering College, in Cute Hall at 10.00 a.m. The Head of the Department, faculty members and the students from Mechatronics Department participated in the guest lecture. Presidential address was given by Dr.M. Premkumar, Principal, PEC. In his presidential address, he explained the importance of IoT in the upcoming technological world. He illustrated simple examples regarding application of IoT in the daily life. He focused on the areas like smart infrastructure, health care, retail and transportation in which various applications could be developed. He also elaborated about the current project experience, which is designed and implemented on the basis of IoT based Customer Engagement platform with updated technologies including Machine Learning Algorithm and Natural Language processing. He cited various projects which is presented and evaluated by experts from Taiwan Universities, which uses IoT devices. The keynote address was given by the guest speaker Dr. T. Veni, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Kozhikode. She expressed her sincere gratitude to Paavai Engineering College for their support. The session was continued on the title “Research Challenges in Fog Environment for IoT Services”. At the beginning, she focused on the Introduction of Internet of things and the four pillars of IoT. In order to kindle the curiosity among the students the application of IoT concept and devices were picturized in the form of mind mapping. Different software and hardware components required for IoT was explained with pictures and videos. Different sensors that can be deployed for the measurement of strain, temperature, pressure, gas, smoke are explained in detail. Various application in the field of health monitoring, Structures and bridges, Smart car parking, Smart mix design were discussed with practical examples. Further, scope of Mechatronics Engineers was narrated and explained the importance of interdisciplinary research in the future to come. Few demonstration videos
about health monitoring were shown which was very interesting to explore the emerging concepts like IoT. She rendered her heartfelt thanks to the Management, Head of the Department – MCT and the faculty members for their constant and continuous support. Mr. S. Hariharan, III-year Mechatronics Engineering, welcomed the gathering. Around 100 students from Mechatronics were benefited from the lecture. The lecture was followed by a question-answer session. Finally, the event was concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Harichandar.D – II year MCT.
