A guest lecture on the topic of “Scope of NDT (Non-Destructive Testing)” was organized by the Department of Mechanical Engineering on 16.08.2019 in Paavai Engineering College. Mr. Rajesh Subramanian, Plant Inspector, Qatargas (RLTO),Qatar was the chief guest and delivered the special lecture. The program was presided over by Professor A.P.Sivasubramaniam, Head of the Department, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Paavai Engineering College. Heads of various departments and faculty members took part and graced the occasion. The welcome address was delivered by Mr. B. Vigneshwaran, final year Mechanical student.The guest speaker was introduced by Mr. Arun Gokul, final year Mechanical student. The chief guest in his lecture explained the job scenario for mechanical engineers in India and abroad. He stressed the significance of learning Hindi and English for getting employment opportunities in other states and abroad. He gave an overview on various NDT methods like Magnetic Particle Testing, Liquid Penetration Testing, Radiography testing, Ultrasonic Testing and Visual and Optical Testing that are carried out in industries. The speaker also elaborated on USA and UK organizations that are offering various certifications required to qualify for Quality Assurance/Quality Control/ Painting/Welding/Maintenance/Corrosion/Testing and Inspection of large-scale pipe-lines, tanks and other huge structures involved in mega construction projects in power and energy sectors. He jovially referred that medical doctors are meant for human beings whereas engineering doctors are required to treat ‘materials’. He further gave information about useful whatsapp groups for engineering students that provides information on employment opportunities, advanced courses and urged them to join such groups instead of wasting time on unnecessary chats. He stressed the importance of clean e-mail id without unnecessary words in it and also the significance of preparing Curriculam-Vitae which is a self-marketing tool to sell oneself to a company as such things also become crucial in the screening and selection process. He urged the students to do project works on their own to gain practical knowledge and experience and not to buy from the markets. As an end note he said, “ Mechanical engineers have job scope in many fields and unlike software engineers, the entry level salary of mechanical engineers is only moderate , but with experience their salary and position are bound to go up. So jobs are aplenty and only you need to improve your employability”. The lecture was well received by the students with good interaction. The program ended with ‘Vote of Thanks’ delivered by Samsad Shahzada, final year Mechanical student.
