The Department of Mechanical Engineering and The Society of Mechanical Engineers jointly organized a webinar on “SAFETY HAZARDS AND MITIGATION MEASURES” on 12.12.2021to make the students to learn about work hazards in industries and the prevention measures. Mr.S.Gokul, Safety Executive, Pon Pure Chemicals Pvt. Ltd, Chennai was the Guest Speaker. The programme was organized and conducted under the guidance of the Director – Administration Dr. K.K.Ramasamy, and the Principal Dr.M.Premkumar. The webinar was convened by Professor& Head of the Department, Dr.A.P.Sivasubramaniam and coordinated by Professors Dr.K.Sundaramurthy and Dr.V.Subburam. The Welcome address was delivered by Mr.R.Danush Maithraya and the Chief Guest introduced by Mr.K. Abdullah both final year Mechanical Engineering students. Faculty members and students actively participated in the webinar in large numbers.
Mr.S.Gokul, explained about different safety hazards that prevail in the industries like fire hazards, electrical accidents, falling of objects and release of toxic gases. He also explained how different PPEs (Personal Protective Equipments) are used in industries to protect various body parts of employees during work. He further explained how fires are classified as class A, B, C, D etc. and the availability of different types of fire extinguisher that uses water, powder, CO2, foam to extinguish particular type of fire. Further more he told that Water extinguishers are not in use today and the CO2extinguisher if not handled properly can cause frost bite in the hand as the gas could produce very cold temperature. At the end, the guest speaker cleared the doubts of the students like the significance of ISO 45001:2008, NEBOSH exams and qualifications required to become an industrial safety engineer.
All the participants found the program very informative and inspiring. The final year Mechanical Engineering student Mr.P.Jayaprakash took care of the master of ceremony and Mr.N. SelvaPrabhu, third year Mechanical student delivered the Vote of Thanks.
