The Centre for Research & Innovation and IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) of Paavai Engineering College organized the second session of the Online Lecture Series on “Optimisation Techniques” with the title: ‘Artificial Neural Networks (ANN)’ on 16th November, 2023 by gathering the participants at Cute hall in the campus. Dr.V.Ganapathy, Eminent Professor was the resource person. The welcome address was given by Dr.D.Banumathy, HOD/Computer Science and Engineering of Paavai Engineering College.
Dr.V.Ganapathy, in his lecture, covered the basic elements as well as the advancements of the ANN optimization technique. He begun explaining topics on “Turing intimation game, Turing test for AI, How neural networks arrived into AI, First generation of AI researchers, What is weak AI and Strong AI, Siri software (narrow intelligence), machine learning and its types, Comparison between Traditional programming and Machine learning” to give a clear understanding about the fundamentals of ANN.
He further went on the explain the History of neural network, Supervised Artificial neural networks learning, Functions involved in ANN such as Activation function of a neuron, sinusoidal function, linearly separable function etc. His lecture also included ANN rules such as Perceptron learning rule, Multilayer perceptron and three layer back propagation network.
He also elaborated on the application aspects of ANN like Unsupervised learning (based on Kohonan network principle which is used to find sea temperature to predict rainfall), Competitive learning and Hebbian learning etc. He stressed the significance of MATLAB for research activities as it can be used as a principal component analysis tool for Fuzzy Logic and other optimization techniques.
The Heads of various departments along with senior faculty members participated in the session and benefitted. Dr.I.Rajendran, Dean – Research & Innovation took care of the arrangements required to organize the program. The Vote of thanks was delivered by Dr.B.Venkatesan, HOD/Department of Information Technology in the end.
