The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Energy Club in association with IIC, PEC of Paavai Engineering College (Autonomous) organized A One Day Webinar on THEFT OF ELECTRICITY on 14th Dec 2023. Dr.M.Premkumar, Principal, presided over the function and insisted the importance of conservation of power to the students.
Mr. M. Prakash, Assistant Engineer, Electricity Distribution Circle, Erode, was the guest speaker. He began his remarks by saying that illegal electricity usage costs the government a lot of money and hikes the average person’s per-unit energy bill. He also explained the facts of electricity theft, such as that theft of electricity is punishable by imprisonment for a term of up to three years, a fine, or both under Section 135 of the Electricity Act of 2003. Also, he defined electricity theft as the dishonest practice of the following: i. taking direct supply without an electric meter; ii. Tampering with an electric meter, loop connection, or any other device or method that interferes with the accurate registration of the meter; iii. Damaging or disrupting an electric meter, apparatus, equipment, or wire to interfere with the accurate measurement of electricity; iii. Using electricity through a tampered electric meter; and iv. Using electricity in ways other than those authorized.
Then, he explained an overview of the challenges of the power sector for electrical engineers. He narrated the role of electrical engineers in power sector and in society. Finally he interacted with the Students and clarified their doubts about the context of the webinar. The webinar has proven to be very inspiring and informative for the students.
