The Department of Civil Engineering, Paavai Engineering College (Autonomous) and Paavai Civil Engineering Association, Institution’s Innovation Council (PEC-IIC) jointly organized Alumni guest lecture titled “Innovative Concrete Solutions – Demonstrating Excellence in Concreting” and One Day Workshop titled “BIRLA – CONQUERETE” Cube Contest on 16.04.2024 from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. as a part of experimental learning activity. Ms.P.N. Thenswetha, Final year student welcomed the gathering & Mr.L.Dhanush, Third year student gave the Chief Guest introduction.
Dr.M. Premkumar, Principal, Paavai Engineering College delivered his presidential address on this event, he elaborated about the importance of the Excellence in Concreting. In this both events, total number of 70 students of II, III and IV year Civil Engineering department has participated.
Prof.K.Sharmiladevi, Head of the Department introduced the speaker and gave an overview of the event and elaborated the importance of hands on training in Civil Engineering. Mr.K.Aravidh, Technical Officer, Kesoram Industries Ltd., Salem, was the resource speaker.
In Cube Contest event, total numbers of 4 (10 members per team) student teams of II, III and IV year from Civil department have participated. It is a Concrete making event, we had given the ingredients such as Birla Shakti Cement (ConQUerete), Fine aggregate, Coarse aggregate and Water. In addition to the ingredients, we also given the equipment needed for making of fresh concrete. The Chief guests from the Birla Shakti Cements had briefed the design procedure for making the fresh concrete and they also instructed the students to utilize the given ingredients properly.
During the preparation of the concrete by our students, they conducted the Slump Cone test, which is the part of Workability test of Fresh Concrete. Then they motivated the students to complete the casting process shortly. Finally, the students completed the casting of fresh concrete within the prescribed duration of time and they poured the concrete in the concrete cube mould (150mmx150mmx150mm) in order to find the 7 days strength of the hardened concrete. At the end of this event, students were learnt about Proportioning of Ingredients used for the manufacturing of concrete, compaction and consistency of concrete. At the end of the 7th day, we have to find out the Compressive Strength of the Hardened concrete using Compressive Testing Machine. After the testing, the top 2 teams, who have got higher compressive strength of concrete by comparing with the Conventional concrete strength will be honored with Certificates by HoD and Birla Shakti Cement zonal head.
