In his address, he highlighted that the event would provide a platform for students to hone their debating skills, critical thinking, and ability to articulate complex ideas effectively. The debate focused on the topic ‘Bharathi Kanda Parasakthi: Bharathidasan Kanda Manudasakthi,’ bringing together participants to explore these contrasting visions. Dr. Gopala Narayana Murthi, Sri Mahabharathi higher Secondary School was the chief guest for the event and delivered the special address. During his speech, he shared an engaging and remarkable story titled ‘Valampuri Sangu’ written by Na. Parthasarathy, a short story writer captivating the audience with its narrative.
The story involved a nuclear family consisting of a husband, wife, and mother. The pregnant wife went into labor, and her mother advised the husband to accompany her, but he refused due to pressing work at the office. He explained that his manager had reprimanded him for his lack of punctuality. As a result, the husband did not go with his wife. During this time, he went in search of a pearl and found a Valampuri conch. However, his brother soon arrived with the shocking news that his wife and child had died. The man then threw the Valampuri conch back into the sea. The manager scolded him again, insisting that he should retrieve the conch from the sea. In his attempt to do so, the man drowned and died.
The chief guest by telling the story explained the importance of prioritizing family and personal relationships over work and material pursuits. It highlights how neglecting loved ones for the sake of professional obligations can lead to irreversible losses and deep regret. The narrative serves as a reminder that the true treasures of life are found in the time and care we give to our families, not in material possessions or career achievements.
The debate and Dr. Murthi’s story created a stimulating atmosphere, encouraging attendees to reflect on the ideas presented. The event was a significant occasion for the Tamil Mandram, showcasing intellectual discourse and cultural appreciation. Finally, the chairman concluded the session with motivational quotes, and the program successfully ended with the national anthem.
