The International Day for Biological Diversity was observed on 22nd May 2025 at M.S. Swaminathan Vayal Kudam, jointly organized by Paavai Organic Farming (POF) and Paavai Velaan Mandram. The program aimed to raise awareness about the importance of conserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
The proceedings commenced with a welcome address by Santhoshkumar, IV Year – Agri, Overall Coordinator, Paavai Organic Farming, who emphasized the significance of biodiversity conservation and the role of youth in maintaining ecological balance.
Students actively participated in field activities, including planting and nurturing Thandukeerai (Amaranthus sp.), a leafy vegetable rich in iron, calcium, and vitamins. Thandukeerai is highly valued for its fast growth, nutritional benefits, and adaptability to organic farming practices. Its cultivation not only improves soil health but also provides a sustainable source of greens for the campus and community.
Faculty Coordinator, Er. U. Karthickeya, provided practical guidance about the plants, explaining optimal soil conditions, watering schedules, pest management, and nutrient requirements. He highlighted the importance of monitoring plant growth stages, maintaining proper spacing, and integrating organic fertilizers to ensure healthy development and maximize yield.
Dr. B. Kailashkumar, M.Tech., Ph.D., Head of the Department of Agricultural Engineering, addressed the gathering and shared insights on integrating modern agricultural practices with traditional techniques to conserve biodiversity and maintain ecosystem health. The program was efficiently coordinated under the supervision of Er. U. Karthickeya, B.E. (Agri.), M.E., PGD A&LD, Lecturer & Farm Superintendent, Coordinator – Paavai Organic Farming.
