The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought was observed on 17th June 2025 at the Polyhouse, jointly organized by Paavai Organic Farming (POF) and Paavai Velaan Mandram. The theme for 2025, “Restore the land. Unlock the opportunities.”, emphasized the potential of land restoration to create jobs, improve food and water security, enhance economic resilience, and support climate action by revitalizing degraded ecosystems.
The proceedings commenced with a welcome address by Vignesh S., IV Year – Agri, Treasurer, Paavai Organic Farming, who highlighted the significance of soil and water conservation and the vital role of youth in combating land degradation.
Students actively participated in field activities, including preparing paddy nurseries and planting ash gourd (Benincasa hispida), a nutritious and hardy crop valued for its high water content, medicinal properties, and sustainable farming benefits. An exhibition of indigenous seeds and grains cultivated in the Paavai Organic Farm further highlighted sustainable farming practices and underscored the importance of preserving traditional agricultural knowledge.
Dr. B. Kailashkumar, M.Tech., Ph.D., Head of the Department of Agricultural Engineering, addressed the gathering and shared insights on integrating modern agricultural practices with traditional techniques to mitigate the impacts of desertification and drought. The program was efficiently coordinated under the supervision of U. Karthickeya, B.E. (Agri.), M.E., PGD A&LD, Lecturer & Farm Superintendent, Coordinator – Paavai Organic Farming.
The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by M. Kamalesh, IV Year – Agri, Banana Farming Coordinator, who expressed gratitude to the HoD, faculty coordinators, and students for their active participation, which ensured the success of the program.
