The Department of Mathematics organized an online Guest Lecture on 15.11.2025 at 9.30 a.m. titled “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning with Computational Models.” The session was delivered by Dr. Anna Anbumozhi, Assistant Professor, Data Science and Business Systems, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai.
The event saw excellent participation with around 900 students and staff, reflecting the strong interest in emerging technologies. The main objective of the session was to introduce first-year engineering students to the fundamentals of AI and ML and to help them understand how core mathematical concepts support modern computational models.
Dr. Anna presented a clear overview of Artificial Intelligence, its evolution, and the role of Machine Learning in today’s data-driven world. A major highlight of the lecture was her explanation of key mathematical foundations such as Linear Regression, Classification Models, Loss Functions, Gradient Descent, the Perceptron Model, Convolution Operations, and the Softmax Function, all of which form the backbone of intelligent systems.
She effectively linked these ideas to first-year mathematics topics, enabling students to see the practical relevance of algebra, calculus, and matrices in engineering applications. She also highlighted the diverse applications of AI and ML in healthcare, finance, transportation, robotics, smart cities, and automation.
The outcome of the event was highly encouraging, as students gained clarity, motivation, and a deeper understanding of how mathematics drives AI technologies.
The Department of Mathematics expresses its sincere gratitude to our Chairman Sir, Correspondent Ma’am, Dean Ma’am, and HoD Sir for their constant support and encouragement, which played a crucial role in the successful conduct of this online guest lecture.
