Women Welfare Committee of Paavai Engineering College organized a one-day seminar titled ‘Awareness on OSTEOPOROSIS’ on 4th February 2025 at Tata Hall, with the primary objective of creating awareness among students about the bone health and preventive care. The session aimed to educate participants about osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones and increases the risk of fractures.
The event saw the enthusiastic participation of 350 female students and faculty members from multiple departments across the institution, all of whom expressed keen interest to know about osteoporosis. The session commenced with a warm welcome address delivered by Ms. C. Nandhu, I CSE, who set the tone for the day by highlighting the significance of such initiatives in broadening students’ academic horizons. The Presidential Address was given by Dr. K. Selvi, Dean Academics. She emphasized the importance of the awareness and early prevention. She appreciated the efforts of the organizers in arranging such an informative program and also emphasized the need for awareness and education regarding osteoporosis, stressing that preventive healthcare is essential in today’s fast-paced lifestyle.
The seminar’s Keynote Address was delivered by the guest speaker, Dr.A.Hepsi Rachel Chellarani, Principal, Paavai College of Nursing and Research, Namakkal. The Chief Guest, delivered an informative presentation explaining the causes, symptoms and long-term effects of osteoporosis. The speaker described osteoporosis as a ‘silent disease’ because bone loss occurs gradually without obvious symptoms until a fracture happens. Key risk factors such as ageing, hormonal changes, calcium and vitamin D deficiency, sedentary lifestyle and poor nutrition were discussed in detail.The seminar highlighted preventive strategies, including maintaining a balanced diet rich in calcium, regular weight-bearing exercise and healthy lifestyle habits. The importance of early screening through bone density tests was also stressed. Visual aids and examples helped participants to understand how osteoporosis affects life and how it can be managed effectively.
The event was convened by Dr. R. Shanthi, Professor and Head, Department of English, who provided strategic support and guidance throughout the planning and execution of the seminar. The programme was coordinated by Ms. R.Saranya, ASP, Dr.R.Tamilselvi, AP and Ms. T.Manjula, AP, Department of English. The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms.S.Nikhitha, I Cyber, who expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the guest speaker.
