The Department of Food Technology, Paavai Engineering College (Autonomous), Namakkal, organized a Guest Lecture on “Shelf-Life Extension of Foods through Sustainable Food Packaging” on 9th February 2026 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Cute Hall for undergraduate students of the department. The programme aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and industrial practices in sustainable food packaging, with emphasis on shelf-life enhancement, environmental safety, and regulatory aspects.
The session was delivered by Dr. Rathinavel S., Assistant Professor, SRM Institute of Science & Technology, Trichy, along with the presence of Dr. K. K. Ramasamy, Administrator, Paavai Institutions, and Dr. S. Kailash, Head of the Department, Food Technology. Dr. Rathinavel S. explained the concept of food shelf-life, deterioration mechanisms, and the role of packaging as a protective barrier. He discussed sustainable packaging materials such as biodegradable polymers, edible films, active and intelligent packaging systems, and the application of nanotechnology and bio-based materials. Challenges in replacing conventional plastics and the importance of food safety regulations were also highlighted.
Dr. K. K. Ramasamy emphasized the importance of sustainability in food systems and the role of packaging innovation in environmental responsibility. Dr. S. Kailash highlighted the significance of such programmes in enhancing student employability, research orientation, and industry readiness.
An interactive session was conducted where students raised queries regarding biodegradable packaging feasibility, cost and scalability issues, career opportunities in food packaging research, and regulatory approvals.
The programme resulted in enhanced student awareness of sustainable food packaging concepts, real-world industrial challenges, and research opportunities. It also strengthened the linkage between academia and industry. The Department of Food Technology expressed its gratitude to the resource persons and the management for their support in organizing the programme.
