A one-day industry guest lecture titled “Strong, Durable and Sustainable Concrete – JSW Cement Limited” was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering in association with the Paavai Civil Engineering Association, Paavai Engineering College (Autonomous), on 06.02.2026. The programme commenced with a welcome address by Ms. M. Jannathul Roshni, a third-year student, followed by the Chief Guest introduction delivered by Ms. R. Priyadharshini, a third-year student.
Dr. K. K. Ramasamy, Director Administration, Paavai Engineering College, delivered the presidential address, in which he emphasized the importance of Civil Engineering education and highlighted the future scope and career opportunities for Civil Engineers.
Dr. K. Sharmiladevi, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, introduced the resource person and presented an overview of sustainable concrete and its advantages. Mr. S. Seenivasan, Deputy Manager, JSW Cement Limited, Chennai, served as the resource speaker. He explained that more than 60% of JSW Cement’s raw materials are derived from industrial by-products such as slag and fly ash. He also stated that JSW Cement has one of the lowest CO₂ emission intensities globally, approximately 258 kg per tonne of cementitious material. Furthermore, he highlighted the company’s focus on the production of slag-based products such as GGBS and PSC, which contribute to high-strength, durable, and low-carbon concrete. He stated that Civil engineering is the backbone of development in North India. From highways and housing to dams and disaster-resistant structures, civil engineers contribute significantly to economic growth and public welfare.
The programme was coordinated by Dr. K. Sharmiladevi, HoD/Civil, Mr. A. Jayapal, AP/Civil, and Mr. M. Rajkannan, AP/Civil. Faculty members of the department and 90 participants, including first-year Civil Engineering students, attended the guest lecture. Finally, the JSW team issued certificates to all the attendees. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. S. Harini, a second-year student. The one-day industry guest lecture was successfully conducted, and the session proved to be highly informative and enriching for the participants.
