A Six-day online Faculty Development Programme on “Recent Advances In Smart Materials And Sensor Technology” was organised by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Paavai Engineering College (Autonomous), Namakkal from 12th February to 17th February 2024, in association with IETE-WEEC & IETE, Erode Center in the presence of Dr.JyothiSinghai, Chairman-IETE WEEC, MANIT, Bhopal and Dr.T.Meeradevi, chairman, IETE, Erode center. The Programme was convened by Dr.M.Sudha, Prof&Head, ECE and Dr.S.Vijayakumar, Professor, ECE. The FDP programme was attended by more than 180 overall participants from different Institutions across India.
In the presidential address, Dr. M. Premkumar, Principal, Paavai Engineering College addressed that “Recent Advances in Smart Materials and Sensor Technology” is the need of the hour for implementing projects in real world applications. He also appreciated the efforts taken by the department in organising such Faculty Development programme. The inauguration was followed with a welcome address and introduction of resource speaker by Dr.S.Vijayakumar, Professor, ECE. Dean Academics, Professor, Faculty Development Department, Dr.M.Sudha, HoD/ECE, Mrs.C.Vanaja ASP, ECE, Mr.R.Logarasu, AP (Sr.Grade), ECE Mr.D.Satheeshkumar AP, ECE, Mrs.R.Bhuvaneshwari, AP, ECE, Mr.A.Saravanan, AP, ECE, Mrs.N.Gangarani AP, ECE, Coordinators of Faculty development programme, staff members of our institution and participants from different Institutions across India attended the inaugural session.
The Speaker of the Day 1 – Dr. K M Palanisamy, Professor/ECE, Dr.T.Thimmaiah Institute of Technology, KGF, Karnataka, presented the topic on “Challenges, Developments, Recent Advancements in Smart Materials”. He explained that the advances in smart materials are employed in all fields. He insisted all the faculty to motivate their students to do real time projects by using smart materials. He cited lot of examples and applications based on smart materials. The session ended with queries from the participants.
On Day 2, Resource Speaker Dr.S.Jayanthi. Asstant.Professor, Department of Physics, Sona College of Arts and Science, Salem, TamilNadu, handled her session on “Adaptive Structures for Intelligent Systems using Smart Materials”. She explained about Shape memory materials, Chromoactive materials, Shrilk, XPL and Characteristics of adaptive structures. She also gave the difference between structural adaptations and adaptive structures. She also delivered the applications of smart materials in aerospace technology. The session ended with a discussion about different types of smart material by the participants.
On Day 3, Mr.Sekaran C, Technical Consultant and Trainer, HMT (Rtd AGM), Bangaluru, handled the session on “Smart Materials as Sensors and Actuators”. He explained the evolution of Industry from ‘Industry1.0 to Industry4.0’. He explained about industry related manipulations such asSmart Design,Smart monitoring, Smart machining, Smart control and Smart scheduling etc. He also elucidated about theworking model of actuators in industry. He elaborated about actuators used in CNC machines.
On Day 4, Dr. A.Karthikeyan, Asso.Professor/ECE, SNS College of technology, Coimbatore discussed about “Sensor Fabrication and characterization techniques”. He explained the various Sensor Fabrication steps using MEMS Technology, Sensor Working Model, Wireless Passive Pressure Sensor and others . He also explained about application of sensors in automation system. He conducted an online puzzle and the session ended with a discussion on sensor characteristics.
On Day 5, Dr.T.Meeradevi, Professor/ECE, Kongu Engineering College, Erode, TamilNadu presented on “Sensor Based Electronic Systems and Circuits”. She explained about Life without Sensors and Life with Sensors. She gave an overview of various sensors and explained about Sensor Networks in Medical Care. In addition she added about sensor network in Telemedicine, Remote sensing, wireless body area network, wearable system etc.
On Day 6, Guest speaker Mr.Boopathi Sakthivel, Founder and CEO of Prashan Medical Technologies, Coimbatore presented the topic on “Simulation, Optimization and Characterization of Various Sensors”. He explained the errors in sensor, Optimization and Simulation of Sensors in industries. He elaborated about the factors, challenges and limitations of sensor optimization. He also showed the simulation of various sensor characteristics with graphical representation.
The participants shared their feedback for all the sessions. Finally, Mrs.C.VANAJA Associate Professor delivered the Vote of thanks along with Dr.M.Sudha, Prfoessor and HoD, ECE department
The objective of the FDP was achieved. The overall session discussion benefitted the faculty members. This FDP would help the participants to get more knowledge about the advancements smart materials and sensor technology and also it would help them to get direction in their research area.
