The Department of Robotics and Automation, Paavai Engineering College, organized an online guest lecture on “Robotics in Product Development” on 24.10.2025 through the Google Meet platform. The Chief Guest of the day was Dr. Ganesh Sankaran, General Manager, Product Development, Ford Motor Company Limited, Chennai. The program was coordinated by Dr. M. Matheswaran, Dr. R. Rajeshkannan, and Mr. M. K. Prabhu, under the guidance of the Convener, Dr. V. Subburam, Head of the Department of Robotics and Automation, and the Patron, Dr. M. Premkumar, Principal.
The guest lecture aimed to provide insights into the emerging role of robots and automation systems in the automotive industry. The resource person began the session by comparing traditional manufacturing methods with modern manufacturing, which has evolved from mechanization to automation. He explained the various processes involved in car manufacturing and elaborated on designing using modeling software, along with the extensive use of robots and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) in production, material handling systems, and assembly lines.
He highlighted that modern quality control involves vision systems, and advanced tools ensure the overall quality of the final product. By displaying graphs, he illustrated the significant improvements in productivity, accuracy, safety, and cost efficiency achieved through the implementation of robotic and automated systems. He also showcased videos demonstrating how robots and automation technologies are applied at different stages of car manufacturing.
The session was conducted in an interactive manner. Dr. Ganesh emphasized that robotics engineers will be in great demand in the future. To make the most of this opportunity, he encouraged students to develop skills in ROS (Robot Operating System) and other relevant tools and technologies. He also discussed the future scope of robotics and automation engineering using statistical data, presenting an optimistic outlook for aspiring engineers.
At the end of the session, Dr. Ganesh answered various questions raised by the students, providing clear and insightful responses. The students participated enthusiastically in organizing the event. Mr. D. R. Benny Hospan, a final-year student, served as the Master of Ceremonies, Mr. R. Chandrakanth introduced the Chief Guest, and Mr. C. Aakash delivered the Welcome Address and the Vote of Thanks.
The program was well received and appreciated by all the participants.
