The Department of English organized a three-day online Faculty Development Program (FDP) from 16.09.24 to 18.09.24, focused on ‘Incorporating Indian Literary Works in Teaching Communication Skills to Engineers’. Held on Microsoft Teams, the program aimed to provide educators with insights on using Indian literary works to enhance the communication skills of engineering students.
The FDP featured three experienced resource persons: Dr. Preeti Tiwari, Dr. Ambri Sharma, and Dr. Mariana Mukherjee, who shared their knowledge on integrating Indian literature into the teaching of communication.
On the first day, Dr. Preeti Tiwari explored the relevance of classical Indian epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana in teaching ethics, leadership, and conflict resolution. She emphasized how these texts offer valuable life lessons that can be applied to the professional and personal growth of engineers.
On the second day, Dr. Ambri Sharma focused on modern Indian literary works by authors like R.K. Narayan and Rabindranath Tagore. She highlighted how their storytelling techniques can teach precision, clarity, and creativity in communication, skills that are vital for technical professionals.
On the final day, Dr. Mariana Mukherjee discussed the importance of regional Indian literature in fostering intercultural communication. She explained how exposure to diverse linguistic and cultural contexts through literature can better prepare engineering students for the globalized work environment.
The program was well-received, with participants appreciating the relevance of Indian literary works in improving communication skills. The interactive sessions encouraged participants to explore how literature can enhance critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and interpersonal communication in the engineering field. The FDP concluded with positive feedback, underscoring the value of literature in technical education.
